How it works

How Hypnotherapy Works & What It Helps

What hypnosis actually is, why it reaches things talking around them doesn’t, and the range of what it’s genuinely useful for.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural and normal state of altered consciousness. It’s the feeling you get right before you fall asleep, or when you first wake up. It happens when your mind wanders and thoughts turn into daydreams, or when a drive home passes without your remembering any of it.

More precisely, it’s a focused state of awareness and concentration in which the senses heighten and the physical body relaxes deeply. In that state you are at your most receptive to thoughts and suggestions entering the mind — an ideal learning state, and one you remain in control of throughout.

This is what allows hypnosis to access and override subconscious programming, so that it works in alignment with your conscious intention rather than against it.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a complementary and alternative health-care service, used principally for vocational and avocational self-improvement. It applies hypnosis in a safe, therapeutic setting to create lasting positive change in how you think, feel and behave.

It is important to be precise about what it isn’t. Hypnotherapy is not psychology. It does not include diagnosis, and it is not the practice of medicine or psychology, nor a substitute for licensed medical or psychological services. Problems of psychogenic or functional origin are worked with on psychological or medical referral only.

Why choose hypnotherapy? Because it works

By working with your own subconscious mind, hypnotherapy is often quick and effective at resolving personal issues and improving focus and performance. It lets you replace limiting behaviours with attitudes and actions that promote growth.

It’s effective, deeply relaxing and drug-free. Rather than adding something from outside, it helps you focus, direct and maximise the inner resources you already have.

Applications

What hypnotherapy is used for

Some of the issues below may require a psychological or medical referral before work can begin. That’s a normal part of responsible practice — we’ll cover it in your consultation.

Addictions

Support during substance-abuse recovery, and help for family affected by an addict’s behaviour. Always alongside, never instead of, clinical treatment.

Career

Reawaken motivation, release the fear that keeps you from asking, get organised, and take steps toward the work you actually want.

Fears & phobias

Flying, heights, water, animals, enclosed spaces, loss of control — among the most reliably responsive areas of hypnotherapy.

Grief recovery

Finding a way to keep moving after profound loss, without being asked to rush or minimise it.

Habit control

Nail biting, grinding, smoking, compulsive checking and the rest of the loops that run without your permission.

Health & rejuvenation

Managing emotional and physical discomfort to support energy and wellbeing, in coordination with your medical care.

Learning

Memory, focus, study habits and test anxiety — particularly useful for students and people returning to study.

Life-altering events

Processing major change: divorce, relocation, bereavement, and the disorientation that follows.

Motivation

Removing the roadblocks and the limiting self-talk that sit between you and what you say you want.

Negative emotions

Letting go of anger, frustration, guilt, shame and worry that have outstayed their usefulness.

Performance

Public speaking, presentations, auditions, competition — reducing the anxiety and sharpening the focus.

Self-esteem & confidence

Changing the internal picture, which is usually what determines whether any other change holds.

Relationships

Repairing and enriching personal and professional relationships, and forgiving yourself as well as others.

Spirituality

Reconnecting with a sense of balance and presence, on your own terms rather than anyone else’s.
